First Generation

1. Onesime GODIN [scrapbook] was born on 16 Oct 1902 in New Brunswick, Canada. He died on 5 May 1972 in Sanford Maine.

My grandfather Onesime Godin was born in Portage River, NB Canada. Met his wife Mable when he went to Maine looking for a job. They married and settled in Springvale Maine and then later in Sanford Maine.

While visiting family in Hartford CT in 1944 or 1945, Onesime and Mable were in the great Ringling Brothers Circus Fire. The biggest circus fire in History. 160 people died, 60 of them were children. Onesime and Mable did make it out of the tent fire unharmed. One of the children in this fire was a little girl who went unclaimed for many many years. They called her Little Miss 1565. My grandfather (Onesime) felt so bad for this little unclaimed girl that he wanted to have her buried on his family plot in Maine. It never did happen, but he wanted it badly.

When I think of my grandfather, the first thing that comes to mind is an image of him sitting in his rocking chair laughing. He had one of the best laughs I've ever heard. Another thing I remember is him kissing us kids on the forehead. He never kissed us on the lips or cheek because he didn't want to pass anything on to us or visa versa. He was a kind man to us grandkids, but he was very strick as a parent as well as being very caring.

He Belonged to the Nights of Columbus for many years. Onesime died surrounded by family of cancer in 1972

Onesime married Mable DUPREY [scrapbook] daughter of Alex DUPREY and Marie Agnes DEVOST on 24 Nov 1922. Mable was born on 24 Jun 1905 in Ashland Maine. She died on 17 Jun 1990 in Sherbrooke Quebec Canada. She was buried on 19 Jun 1990 in Sandford Maine.

She died in Sherbrooke Quebec Canada. A funeral mass was said for her at 9:00 a.m.
She was waked at the LaFrance Funeral home located on 29 Winter St. in Sanford
She died at the Vincent de Paul Hospital in Sherbrooke.

She was a member of the St. Jean d'Arc Catholic Church and a member of the Daughters of Isabella.
While she lived in Sanford she worked at the Goodall-Sanford Textile Mills and the Sanford Dress Shop.
